Surfski Kayaks Have Arrived

If you have seen fast open top kayaks catching waves and riding for hundreds of metres in Christchurch and Bournemouth Bay - you have probably seen a surfski kayak.

The goal with a surfski kayak is to provide a lightweight boat that bridges the gap between sea kayaks and surfskis. By blending speed, high stability and a performance oriented deck and outfitting, this type of boat offers new levels of accessibility for a wide range of paddlers.

An example of a fast, stable surfski kakak that most kayakers should be able to hop onto and paddle is around 16 to 18 feet. A wider boat is generally more stable and a longer narrower design, at 20 to 22 feet, is usually faster. Both can have the surfski simplicity of a fully adjustable footbrace and rear deck bungees for carrying light gear.

Surfski kayaks incorporate some new features that add to their user friendly appeal. Features include moulded in carry handles, a water bottle holder in the cockpit, Venturi drain and hull breather. The foot controlled surfski rudder is standard - just point your toes and steer left or right.

For fitness paddlers and racers who want extra emphasis on stability, or touring kayakers looking to make the transition to high performance, or cruisers looking for a simple, efficient boat for a day on the water - a surfski kayak will take you there.
